New federal varsity in Ekiti set to Launch with four faculties in October‎

Ifaki, Ekiti – In a move poised to bolster technological and environmental education in Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin Ekiti, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, has revealed that the institution will commence operations with academic programs across four specialized faculties.Prof.

‎Aribisala made the announcement during a reception organized in his honor by the 1979 set of the Ifaki Grammar School Old Students Association (IGSOSA) in Ifaki Ekiti on Sunday.

‎The event celebrated his recent appointment as the university's pioneer Vice Chancellor, highlighting his journey from a local alumnus to a national academic leader.

‎"We are set to lay a solid foundation for academic excellence by running a fully residential institution that will produce disciplined graduates and 21st-century leaders capable of solving Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, particularly unemployment," Aribisala stated.

‎He emphasized the university's commitment to a residential model to foster discipline and innovation among students, adding that recruitment advertisements for academic and non-teaching staff would soon appear in national media and on the institution's website.

‎Established on February 20, 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through a bill sponsored by Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), FUTES represents a strategic federal initiative to expand access to specialized higher education in science, technology, engineering, and environmental studies.

‎The university, located in the historic town of Iyin Ekiti, has already benefited from community donations of facilities, which have accelerated its takeoff preparations.

‎The four faculties and their initial programs, totaling 35 undergraduate courses, are tailored to address Nigeria's developmental needs in technology and sustainability:

‎Natural and Applied Sciences: Biochemistry, Biology and Biotechnology, Mathematics, Forensic Science, Geology, Chemical Sciences, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Animal and Environmental Biology.

‎– Engineering and Technology:
‎Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Cybersecurity Science and Technology, Information and Communication Technology.

‎– Environmental Sciences:
‎Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management and Valuation, Environmental Science and Management, Industrial Designs, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and Geoinformatics, Urban and Regional Planning, Forestry and Climate Smart Agriculture, Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology.

‎– Management Sciences:
‎Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship Studies, Transport and Tourism Management.

‎Admissions for the pioneer batch of students are slated to begin in September 2025 for the 2025/2026 academic session, with a focus on recruiting passionate, excellence-driven candidates nationwide.

‎Prof. Aribisala assured stakeholders that all recruitment processes would adhere to federal character principles to ensure equity and merit.

‎As FUTES prepares for its inaugural semester, it joins a growing network of federal universities aimed at tackling unemployment through skill-focused education.
